Ladies and gentlemen… that’s right, men should be aware of the menstrual cycle too. I mean periods are the reason we’re all here in the first place so shouldn’t we all know how they work?
I am over the moon to be able to share with you a straightforward guide to having a zero waste period. This means you’ll have the right info and resources to bleed every month without having to go out and buy tampons/pads which can cost you a good chunk of money over the span of your menstruating years. Not to mention the waste you will save from ending up in landfills and our water ways.
The Huffington Post calculated an estimate total cost of having your period over the span of a lifetime and it’s mind blowing for many reasons. Not only do women earn less money for the same jobs as men, we pay more for NECESSITIES. Let that sink in.
Here are some reasons why a Zero Waste period is superior to traditional:
- You save money
- You’re not running the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome
- You avoid undisclosed toxic ingredients found in traditional tampons and pads (dioxins, pesticides, bleach and chemical fragrance)
- You reduce the environmental impact of disposable pads and/or tampons
Are you intrigued yet?
Let’s get into the nitty gritty of Zero Waste Periods and what a girl needs to be successful on her flow days.
Talk about a revolutionary company, THINX has quite literally changed my life. Gone are the days I would look at my underwear drawer and pick the pair I didn’t mind ruining. I don’t have to ruin any underwear at all. Imagine that? THINX are absorbent, high tech undies that fit just like normal underwear and absorb like a pad holding up to 2 tampons worth of blood. I have 3 pairs of THINX and I love to wear them with my DivaCup for extra protection and on their own on light days. The cool thing is you can wash your THINX and use them again and again, saving you a lot of money on tampons, pads, panty-liners, etc.
The Menstrual Cup
A total game-changer. For my ladies who hate having to change a tampon every few hours and having to worry about leaking, this is what you’ve been dreaming of! A menstrual cup, like the DivaCup can be used for up to 12 hours at a time before you need to worry about it. The cup is made from 100% medical-grade silicone, with no latex, dyes,
rubber, plastic or BPA. You know what that means? No need to worry about toxic shock syndrome, pesticides, bleach or any harsh chemicals hanging out in your body AND no more throwing out tampons and pads that will sit on this earth longer than your lifetime. One of my favorite things about the cup is how easy it is for me to stay active. I can go for long hikes, swim in the ocean for hours, run a marathon(theoretically) without having to worry. I even used my menstrual cup to manage my period when I was living on the road.
Re-usable Cotton Pads
If cups aren’t really your thing, you might like using cotton pads that can be washed, dried and used again and again. I like using cotton pads when I know I’m about to get my period and when I’m almost done with it! Look for a brand that uses 100% organic cotton as they are better for the environment and better for your health.
I know the menstrual cup and reusable pads sound a little intimidating at first and I understand if you’d rather stick to tampons and pads. In that case, look for organic options to avoid the harsh chemicals found in traditional products.
If you’re anything like me and the thought of continuing to use harsh chemicals in your menstrual routine scare you and you still have a stack of tampons and pads, there are plenty of women who could use your donation. You can easily find a homeless shelter near you with the help of this directory:
If you made the switch to any of these eco-friendly products I’d love to know!
